It was the worst experience for me. Allthough there are cases that CPS needs to get involoved in, ie; 9 month old babies being prostituted out to random passers by for money, (TRUE story), and parents having sex with 2-16 year olds, there is at least a 2 in 5 ratio of situations that are absolutely ridiculous. There is blatant abuse of power by case workers, and there is verbal abuse and misuse of power towards both parents involoved in the system as well as the children that were under our care. After removing a 2 year old from his home and placing him in a foster home the size of a shoe box with a woman already housing 3 other foster children, who spoke no english, I resigned from my position. I could not get through to anyone, and could not get anything changed, so rather than continue seeing this gross abuse I walked away. How life has changed for the poor biological family is unreal. There are the biological parents whose lives are shattered. Nobody cares. I grew up in poverty. I think about all the poor children besides me or did they all end up in foster care. Defuncting the Aid to Dependent Children program was probably the biggest mistake of our lives. I to needed to think about how to support myself after 18; but I guess because I wasn't handed everything (foster care) perhaps I knew the answer.
